GT Maru

We’re proud to present GT Maru, an ode to rounded English characters found on signage across Japan. It combines the warmth and flow of sign painting with the mechanical quality of engraved letters.

Hon

During one of his trips to Japan, Thierry couldn’t help but admire the casual and friendly tone of wayfinding systems found around construction sites. Comparing the design of public communication was one way for him to try to begin to grasp the nuances of a new city and culture.

In Switzerland, construction signage is designed with stark geometric shapes. The red, black, and white signs focus on warning the passersby of potential danger ahead.

Japanese construction signage sometimes takes on a personality of its own. Plain metal poles are replaced with joyful animal characters and cartoons adorn signs. The choreography of bright colors and faces-in-places creates an atmosphere that seems more welcoming. Who knew construction material could be both efficient and friendly?

This simple observation sparked an interest in designing a typeface that could communicate in a casual yet functional manner. To achieve that, Thierry combined these two very different sources of inspiration.

Many signs in Japan are still painted by brush. The letters often showcase rounded terminals and a natural flow that is specific to sign painting.

In Switzerland, it’s rare to spot hand-painted signs. Instead, most signs are printed in austere sans serifs.

Design

Over the course of the next four years, Thierry carefully drafted countless iterations of rounded letters, paying homage to the signs he saw in Japan. The GT Maru family is a result of this design exploration into roundness — or maru — in the Latin alphabet.

The Japanese writing system is based on each character taking up one square block, while Latin letters usually vary in width and height. In Japan, Latin-alphabet characters — in an effort to make two different systems fit together — feature extremely short ascenders and descenders. GT Maru shares these vertical proportions. This results in GT Maru’s compact, friendly look.

Finding harmony between the human hand and machine is the essence of GT Maru. The monolinear strokes are softened by the rounded terminals and brush-like flow.

For a more casual look, the typeface also offers alternative single-story versions of a and g.

GT Maru Mono celebrates the square character frame used to compose Japanese characters by fully embracing the aesthetic quality of the grid. The width of each letter is equal to the uppercase height. The typeface comes to life in this strict horizontal rhythm.

Letters & Characters have the same amount of horizontal space.

They are widely used in early computers and computer terminals. They often had limited graphical capabilities because of severe memory restrictions

A typewriter is a machine for typing characters similar to those produced by a printer’s movable type. Usually a typewriter has an array of keys, and

The first commercial typewriters were introduced in 1874, but did not become common in offices until after the mid-1880s. The typewriter quickly became

Mega

Breaking free from the constraints of body text, GT Maru Mega takes the liberty to pump the design language up a notch. As the fullest expression of roundness in the family, Mega’s strokes inflate and deflate into each other — as if the letters were on the verge of bursting. This delightful, stadium-sized typeface embraces the variable font format, so you can seamlessly tether between maximum and minimum counter and inlet sizes.

Go Big

The Mega subfamily also comes with outlined, shaded, and glowing variants. A throwback to the glorious age of 70s rubdown typefaces — our take: Mega Outline Shaded Glow.
